DuPont Tyler Middle School

Parent Involvement Policy

Mission Statement: The mission of DuPont Tyler Middle School is to provide diverse learning experiences in a safe, orderly environment, in which students acquire the knowledge to become independent, productive citizens.

The DuPont Tyler Middle School faculty and staff, with the cooperation of the community, students and their families, strive to help each student achieve success and develop the skills necessary to cope in our rapidly changing society and to prepare them for high school.

We also acknowledge that students who develop good work habits, are resourceful, and are self disciplined, tend to have higher academic achievement. We are a team teaching our children how to be good citizens and community leaders for the present as well as the future.

This policy outlines how parents’ input and support are sought for the development of this program. It also shows how the school provides parents with the information and training needed to support their child’s educational progress and the role the community plays in this process.

Parent/School Compact:

At the beginning of the school year, the Parent/School Compact is sent home in the student handbook. This document outlines the responsibilities of the staff, the parent and the student.

Communication:

DuPont Tyler believes that communication between the home and school is vital.

1. An annual parent meeting will be held to explain the school improvement plan, parent involvement policy, and parent/school compact. At this meeting, parents’ rights to be involved are explained as well.

2. Progress reports and report cards will provide parents with information on individual student academic achievement.

3. An individual child’s progress and parent concerns are addressed through e-mails telephone calls, home visits, personal notes, student planners, and conferences.

4. Parents are informed of the total school’s progress, activities, and programs through monthly newsletters, the school sign and the school website.

5. Information can be provided in English and Spanish.

6. Translation services are available upon request.

7. Parents are encouraged to join the PTO, make visits to the school, volunteer, and become involved whenever possible.

8. Parents’ opinions and feedback concerning our program are sought throughout the year.

Advisory/Leadership Groups:

1. Input from parents is welcomed, encouraged, and valued in the planning, writing, revising and evaluating of our school improvement plan and Parent Policy/Compact.

2. Parents serve on the DuPont Tyler PTO which meets regularly to support the vision of the school and to provide parent input in the guidance and direction of our school. All parents are encouraged to be active members of the PTO.

Parent Meetings/Workshops/Trainings:

Parent workshops and family nights will provide information for parents to enable them to understand student academic standards, how to monitor student progress, how to work with their children at home and how to support learning at home. Parent workshops will be offered at flexible times to ensure all parents are able to attend.

Community Involvement:

DuPont Tyler has strong ties with our PENCIL Partners: Vulcan, Publix, and Ryan’s. Parents are encouraged to use the resources of the community for the benefit of their family.

Volunteering:

DuPont Tyler administration, teachers, and staff strongly encourage parents and family members to volunteer at school during the school day.
