History

DuPont Tyler Middle School opened in August of 1986 in the 1969 facility which formerly housed Dupont High School whose students were rezoned to either McGavock or Hunter's Lane High Schools.  As DuPont Tyler opened, Donelson Middle School closed with about two-thirds of its students being rezoned to DuPont Tyler; other students were rezoned from DuPont Hadley Middle School in Old Hickory to complete the student body.  In 1989 the 34.2 acre campus became the site of Tulip Grove Elementary School; the two schools share use of the outside space.
DuPont Tyler's feeder schools are Dodson Elementary and Tulip Grove Elementary.  DuPont Tyler's eighth graders continue their schooling at McGavock Comprehensive High School or one of the magnet schools.
Since its opening, DuPont Tyler's organization and programs have sought to implement the middle school concept with interdisciplinary teams of four teachers serving a team of approximately 120 students, with related studies and activities which allow the student to discover interests and creative applications, with advisor/advisee activities which enable them to develop into successful young teens, and with physical activities and intramurals which foster the development of healthy bodies.  DuPont Tyler continues in these traditions.
